Τhe power of vibration to affect matter has been studied in great detail and is often referred to as Cymatics (from the Ancient Greek word for cyma – κύμα, meaning wave. The term was first introduced by Hans Jenny, a Swiss scientist. Typically a surface such that of a plate, diaphragm, or a membrane is vibrated and displacement of a material such as a paste placed on top is observed. Different patterns can be noticed depending on the frequency of vibration.

This work has also been performed also by Chladni with extraordinary results. Jenny Chladni put sand, dust and fluids on a metal plate connected to an oscillator which could produce a broad spectrum of frequencies. The sand or other substances were organized into different structures characterized by geometric shapes typical of the frequency of the vibration emitted by the oscillator. According to Jenny, these structures looked like mandalas but also other forms recurring in nature. It was particularly impressive to observe that imposing a vocalisation in ancient Sanskrit of Om (regarded by Yogis and Buddhists as the sound of creation) the powder formed a circle with a centre point, one of the ways mystics have been representing the manifestation of the universe from one single source.

More recently sound healing research made advancements in cancer research. A 2018 study from researchers at Duke University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University additionally found that “sound waves are capable of rapidly and efficiently separating circulating tumor cells from blood. These are small pieces of tumor that break away and flow through the bloodstream. They contain a wealth of information including tumor type, physical characteristics and genetic mutations and can be used for biopsies.
