Τhe power of vibration to affect matter has been studied in great detail and is often referred to as Cymatics (from the Ancient Greek word for cyma - κύμα, meaning wave. The term was first introduced by Hans Jenny, a Swiss scientist. Typically a surface such that of a plate, diaphragm, or a membrane is vibrated and displacement of a material such as a paste placed on top is observed. Different patterns can be noticed depending on the frequency of vibration. This study examined the effects of sound meditation, specifically Tibetan singing bowl meditation, on mood, anxiety, pain, and spiritual well-being. Sixty-two women and men (mean age 49.7 years) participated. Following the sound meditation participants reported significantly less tension, anger, fatigue, and depressed mood.
